Scientists from the Robert Szewalski Institute of Flow Machines Polish Academy of Sciences will participate in the implementation of the DUOHEAT project, which aims to develop a two-stage heat pump for industry. The resulting device is intended to recover waste heat and raise its temperature to up to 200°C, so that energy lost today in technological processes can be reused. The project “Implementation of an innovative two-stage heat pump for electrification of high temperature thermal processes – DUOHEAT” is implemented by a consortium of Gdańsk University of Technology, AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków and the Institute of Flow Machinery PAS. The technology will be designed, among other things, for the food, chemical, wood and heat and power industries. Its use may reduce fossil fuel consumption in heat-intensive processes.

PAN IMP syndrome

The work of the team of the Institute of Flow Machinery PAS will guide Dr. Ing. Piotr Klonovich The Turbin Plant. The team will also include: Dr. Łukasz Witanowski – Turbin Plant, Dr. Artur Andrearczyk, Dr. Ing. Paweł Baginski, Dr. Ing. Łukasz Breńkacz – Turbin Dynamics and Diagnostics Department, Dr Jarosław Karwacki - Heat Exchange.

From compressor design to intelligent demonstrator

The main task of IMP PAN will be to develop a high-turn, oil-free multi-stage centrifugal compressor, which will become one of the most important elements of the whole system. Its geometry will be designed on the basis of thermodynamic analyses, flow calculations and proprietary computational codes. Parallel strength analyses of rotor wheels and calculations of dynamics of the entire rotating system will be performed. The next step will be to make a prototype compressor and build the main heat pump module. The device will be tested in a wide range of speeds and loads – from the first start to the nominal operating point. The tests will also include work outside design conditions, operation of high-speed electric drive and cooperation of compressor with other components of the installation. The results of the experiments will be used to validate numerical models and further improve the design. The team will also use machine learning methods to develop a diagnostic system that will monitor the technical condition of the device, detect irregularities and help predict potential problems. The developed models will then be used to optimize heat pump control. The system will be analysed at variable temperature conditions of the source and heat receiver and at different speeds of compressors. This will improve the efficiency, reliability and flexibility of the entire installation.

Technology for the future industry

High temperature heat pumps can become an important tool for electrification of industrial processes. They allow to use energy that is now often discharged into the environment, and turn it into useful technological heat.

The DUOHEAT project aims to create a prototype solution capable of working in industrial conditions. The work of the IMP PAN team will be crucial for the efficiency, durability and safety of the whole system.

The project is financed under the TEAM NET FENG programme of the Foundation for Polish Science. Its overall budget is 10 992 912.95 złand the implementation is planned for three years
